GALLERIA/UPTOWN. With its Jetsons-meets-the-Flintstones interior, only more chic and elegant, Américas has an otherworldly ambience that's as much theater as it is dining. The cuisine follows suit, effortlessly melding substance with spectacle. Dishes incorporate ingredients from a multitude of global destinations, and the resultant offerings include pan-roasted Gulf snapper, grilled venison, paella, and buffalo tenderloin. Excellent service is a treat, as is a decadent tres leches cake. Great cocktails too.

RIVER OAKS. Named for Walter Berryhill, who made and hawked tamales locally during the early part of the century, this Houston-based chain capitalizes on his delicious recipes. The quaint restaurant is usually busy on weekends, but don't be put off by its numerous patrons. It's worth the wait! The signature tempura-fried fish taco is a menu favorite, and mouthwatering breakfast tacos get a flavor punch with pico de gallo, chorizo, and rice and beans. Weather permitting, you can also sit on the deck and people-watch with your breakfast.

HOUSTON. Add a dose of spice to standard steakhouse dining at this gem, whose South American-influenced decor features lush greenery and tropical flowers. Try something out-of-the-ordinary, like South American-style ceviche with hearts of palm, black bean-stuffed empanadas, sliced roasted duck breast with green peppercorn sauce, and churrasco beef marinated in chimichurri sauce (olive oil, garlic, spices). Pork, chicken, and seafood can also be had. The crowd tends to get thick quickly, so it's best to come early or call ahead for reservations.

GALLERIA. Carnivores thrill to this fantastic restaurant, which serves skewer after skewer of roasted meat in an all-you-can-eat bonanza. Brazilian gauchos present steak, pork, chicken, lamb and sausages, all cuts expertly seasoned and exquisitely cooked. They're only the main feature, though, of a meal that includes a magnificent salad bar and side dishes that range from fried bananas to rice and beans. A rustic, upscale interior sets the scene for this decadent binge. Fixed price meals run approximately $30 for lunch and $45 for dinner. What a feast!

WEST UNIVERSITY. Bored with the same old breakfast options? Shake up your routine at this fantastic eatery, whose selection of central Mexican dishes is sure to provide culinary relief. The quaint place serves delicious breakfast tacos, fashioned of homemade tortillas and stuffed with chorizo, eggs, and potatoes. Classic huevos rancheros are also a treat, and even more unusual (to the uninitiated) offerings like tacos made with roasted beef head demand attention too. If you have any command of Spanish, it's a help; if not, you'll still be able to eat well, so don't worry. Fresh juices and smoothies are added perks.
